A zoom limit like that isn't very useful if image stabilization doesn't catch with it, and the ZS3S has top-notch optical stabilization. The camera is downright shake-protective, providing crystal-clear images even when I shook it around at full zoom.
The ZS3's intense lens offers up greater wide-angle capabilities than the recently reviewed Canon PowerShot SX200 IS ; both are superior cameras, but they have clear differences, and I'd recommend one or the other depending on how you'd use the camera.
The Lumix DMC-ZS3S is very much a "set-it-and-neglect doing-it" model; it's dead simple for a novice to take a good photograph, because the camera is chock-a-block with complex automated features. The secret sauce is Panasonic's sterling Intelligent Auto mode, which combines a handful of in-camera settings working in conjunction (incident optimization, ISO controls, face detection, face attention, and optical image stabilization) to optimize in-camera settings based on the shooting conditions.

Keep in mind that many DSLR cameras are sold as camera bodies only without lenses. Other DSLR cameras are sold as a kit, containing a key lens with the camera body. For those more familiar with today's ultra-condensed, point and shoot models, a DSLR model represents a big metamorphosis. But it will provide very good image quality and, thanks to its enchiridion-control features, it will help you learn more about photography than a fully conditioned point and shoot model.
